Hákon Arnar Haraldsson: Iceland’s Rising Star in European Football
Hákon Arnar Haraldsson, a name that has begun to resonate through the corridors of European football, is known for his relentless spirit and exceptional technical skills. This Icelandic midfielder, nurtured in the chilly football halls of Skipaskagi, has made his way to the UEFA Champions League with Lille. Despite being acquired for a substantial fee of €17 million from FC Copenhagen, Hákon remains unfazed by the pressure.
From Iceland to the Champions League
Hákon recently reflected on his journey during an interview with RÚV, as he was heading home to Iceland for a well-deserved Christmas break. The night before, Lille had narrowly defeated FC Rouen, a third-tier team, in the French Cup with a 1-0 victory despite dominating possession with 73%. “It was some third division magic,” Hákon remarked. “We should have been up 7-0 by halftime, but it turned stressful towards the end.”
Settling into Life in Lille
Living in Lille with his girlfriend, Hákon admits that adapting to French life and language has been challenging. “Life is good here, it’s the right size for a city. It’s mainly the language that’s tough. Not many speak English, and French is incredibly difficult. I don’t stand a chance,” he confessed. Hákon hasn’t immersed himself much in French culture, admitting, “I’m not into French music or food, I just like to chill.”
Lille’s Place in French Football
Lille is a significant presence in French football, often underestimated by outsiders. “It’s bigger than people think. We’re a top-six club in France, a league known for its massive clubs. We often fill a 50,000-seat stadium, which says a lot,” Hákon explained. Unlike Copenhagen, where football is central, Lille offers a more balanced lifestyle without constant pressure.
Overcoming Setbacks and Injuries
At 21, Hákon has already experienced the highs and lows of professional football. After a strong start to the season, he suffered a foot fracture, sidelining him temporarily. “I felt I started the season well, playing all games and reaching the Champions League. Breaking my foot with the national team was unbearable, but since returning, I’ve scored twice in two games. It’s boosted my confidence,” he shared.
Challenges and Improvements
Hákon has noted significant improvements since joining Lille. “The French league is incredibly fast and physical. I’ve improved my decision-making and quick thinking. I’ve also focused on strength training,” he said. Playing alongside talents like Jonathan David has been enlightening. “These guys have insane quality and are surprisingly humble.”
The Family Connection
Hákon is the middle brother among Tryggvi Hrafn and Haukur Andri. Tryggvi, who plays for Valur, is the more laid-back of the three. “Tryggvi is a bit lazier, more of a luxury player, while the rest of us are running everywhere,” Hákon joked. Haukur, the youngest, initially joined Hákon in Lille but returned to Iceland, finding the social aspect of the French academy challenging.
Looking Ahead to Anfield
With Lille performing well in the Champions League, Hákon looks forward to facing Liverpool at Anfield. “We’re at least in the playoffs and have a chance to reach the top eight. Playing at Anfield will be a crazy experience,” he said. His family plans to travel in numbers to support him against Salah and company.
The Underestimated French League
Hákon believes the French league is often underrated. “There are loads of good teams. Paris, Monaco, Lyon, and Marseille are massive clubs. Then you have Lens, Rennes, and us. It’s a tough league,” he stated. With Jonathan David leading the scoring charts, Lille aims to return to the Champions League and go far in the cup competitions.
The Path from Lille to Premier League
Lille has been a launchpad for many players like Eden Hazard. “I read that many transition from Ligue 1 to the Premier League and do well. Lille had a good plan for me,” Hákon noted. Playing in the English Premier League remains his ultimate dream. “Watching English football has always been the goal since I was a kid.”
Hákon is contracted with Lille until 2028, and his performances have caught the attention of big clubs. As he prepares to face Liverpool on January 21, the question remains: Will he reach the Premier League soon? Given his work ethic and talent, it wouldn’t be wise to bet against this industrious Icelander.
