Increased Funding for Landspítali’s Emergency Department Expansion
In accordance with the budget proposal currently before the Icelandic Parliament, ISK 650 million has been allocated to Landspítali for the expansion of the emergency department in Fossvogur. This project includes plans for enlarging the existing emergency facilities and establishing a new 25-bed observation unit for acutely ill patients. The funding will be sourced from the budgetary provisions of NLSH ohf., the entity overseeing the construction of the new Landspítali at Hringbraut.

The initial plan was to relocate the emergency department to the new Landspítali at Hringbraut. However, due to construction delays, the opening of this facility is not expected until 2029. “We need to provide the necessary services until then, and hence, we have no choice but to proceed with the expansion of the current emergency department and improve the facilities. We also need to increase the number of inpatient beds at the hospital, and we will find ways to do so in connection with this project,” stated Runólfur Pálsson, CEO of Landspítali.
