Sigyn Blöndal’s New Chapter in Manila
Sigyn Blöndal, a well-known Icelandic media personality, has embarked on a new journey as she moves to Manila, the capital of the Philippines, with her family. Sigyn, previously a producer for children’s and youth programs including the popular “Stundina okkar,” transitioned to working as a rights education director for UNICEF Iceland after leaving Ríkisútvarpið. Her most recent life change is the relocation to Manila, prompted by her husband’s new job opportunity there.
A Family Adventure Across Continents
Earlier this year, Sigyn’s husband was offered a position to lead an office for the Icelandic company Jarðboranir in Manila, focusing on geothermal drilling. “We found the opportunity incredibly exciting,” Sigyn shared. The decision to move was made quickly, with a contract signed by May 1st and a start date in Manila set for August 1st. This transition coincided with their son Breki beginning his studies in the United States, adding to the whirlwind of changes for the family.
Adjusting to Life in a New Hemisphere
Sigyn admits the experience has been surreal, often needing to pinch herself to grasp the extent of their life transformation. Her children are thriving, with her son enjoying school and sports, and her 15-year-old daughter, Ylfa, enrolled in an international school and a local dance academy. “It’s all so different, yet everyone is doing well,” Sigyn remarks. Living on the 16th floor of a 49-story apartment building that houses nearly 5,000 residents, she compares it to a medium-sized Icelandic town.
Discovering the Philippines
Before moving, Sigyn knew little about the Philippines beyond the fact that English was widely spoken. She recalls the curious Easter tradition of crucifixion reenactments and praises the local cuisine. Sigyn also highlights the warmth and friendliness of the Filipino people, noting, “There’s a smile on every corner, and everyone is ready to help.”
Celebrating Christmas in a Tropical Climate
In the Philippines, the Christmas season starts as early as September, with festive music playing despite the tropical heat. Sigyn, an avid Christmas enthusiast, finds joy in the early celebrations but refrains from the traditional Icelandic pre-Christmas cleaning frenzy. Instead, she cherishes simpler traditions like freshly ironed sheets and family bath time on Þorláksmessa.
New Year’s Plans and Family Reunions
Sigyn plans to reunite with her son, his girlfriend, and her mother for the holidays, enjoying quality family time with games and shared meals. The family intends to spend New Year’s Eve on the island of Paloma, away from the bustling city celebrations, opting for a serene beach setting with coral reefs and giant turtles.
A Cultural Exchange and Reflection
Sigyn’s move to Manila offers a unique cultural exchange, differing vastly from Icelandic traditions yet enriched by the warmth of the Filipino people. This experience underscores the privilege of living in a place she never anticipated visiting. The interview with Sigyn Blöndal provides insight into her new life chapter, filled with exploration and adaptation, a narrative available on the Mannlega program on Rás 1.
